The IIBEC Mid-South Chapter has been off to a great start in the first quarter of 2019 and continues to serve its members in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Northern Alabama through regular chapter events and meetings.
Here are a few highlights of some recent activity within the chapter and roofing-related events in the region.
January 2019 – The IIBEC Mid-South Chapter was honored to host Bryan Light, Technical Services Manager, with the Brick Industry Association, for a lunch-and-learn meeting titled, “Field Issues: How to Avoid Common Problems.” The meeting was held at Smith Seckman Reid (SSR)’s office in Nashville, TN, on January 24, 2019. Light did a great job providing insight into the common field issues associated with brick and masonry veneer projects. Special thanks to Light for his time and support of the chapter and to Chris Giffin, IIBEC Region II Director, for attending the event.
February 2019 – Waterproofing workshop. The IIBEC Mid-South Chapter held a successful waterproofing workshop on February 21, 2019, at N&S Waterproofing, in Nashville, TN. Several vendors and suppliers supported the event with hands-on work stations and educational presentations. Special thanks to N&S Waterproofing for hosting the chapter and to everyone who attended and supported this great event.
IRE Nashville – The 2019 International Roofing Expo (IRE) and NRCA’s 132nd Annual Convention was proudly held (for the first time) in our chapter’s epicenter of Nashville, TN, at the Music City Convention Center from February 11-13, 2019. Several IIBEC Mid-South Chapter members attended the event and helped promote the chapter. The event was a huge success, with a participation record set of approximately 14,000. The event was well attended, and a great deal of information was provided by Pratt regarding his topic of recent IBC 2018 changes related to calculating ASCE 7 roof wind-uplift design pressures. Special thanks to Pratt and the Larimer Shannon Group for providing their support and time to help out the chapter.
April, 2019 – The IIBEC Mid-South Chapter was proud to host Kirk Swor with Smart Roof Solutions and David Bell with Siplast for an interesting lunch-and-learn meeting on April 18, 2019, at SSR’s office in Nashville, TN, regarding the use of lightweight insulating concrete in roofing. The event was well attended, and a great deal of discussion followed on the topic. Special thanks to Swor and Bell for their time and support.
As of April 1, 2019, the chapter underwent a name change and rebranding initiative from the former RCI Mid-South Chapter to reflect the new IIBEC name. The official legal name for the chapter is: Mid-South Chapter of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, and the informal or DBA name is: IIBEC Mid-South Chapter. The chapter is currently undergoing some chapter rebranding tasks, including updating the chapter’s website, social media, and logos. Stay tuned for updates on this important and exciting rebranding and renaming initiative as we continue to promote the chapter, spread our mission and values within the building enclosure industry, and continue to attract new members.

So Cal Chapter Attends 2019 RCI Convention
By So Cal Chapter Industry Director Arturo Ortiz, Jr.
The So Cal Chapter of IIBEC made it out to the 2019 RCI International Convention and Trade Show, held March 14-19 at Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, FL. The convention included professional examinations, continuing education seminars, various national and regional committee meetings, trade show exhibition, annual golf tournament, and other festivities. Also featured was the much-anticipated reveal of the new IIBEC organization name and logo, which was received with much fanfare and was an exciting treat for attendees.
This year’s opening ceremony featured Jamie Hyneman of MythBusters fame, who delivered an intriguing keynote address in the form of a Q&A discussion conducted by Second Vice President Scott Hinesley. The interview touched upon Jamie’s wide range of diverse jobs and skills, valuable lessons learned, and his unique life experiences both on and off the set. Jamie provided some words of wisdom in addressing some of the challenges faced by our industry, including the importance of being aware of the entire project process and scope, anticipating unknowns, embracing innovation, having a methodical mindset in experimentation and investigation, and how diversity can help to elevate your team to be greater than the sum of its parts.
The So Cal Chapter was recognized for several notable distinctions during the event, including their donation of $10,000 to the RCI Foundation (RCIF), which elevated the chapter’s overall contribution amount to $61,200 since the chapter’s formation. It gets lonely sometimes being the first chapter at the “Benefactor” level, but we hope it won’t be for long! Members of our local chapter board had the opportunity to present the check and appear in a photo op with RCIF U.S. Chairman Joe Hale. The chapter was also presented with an Outstanding Affiliated Chapter Award for achieving Platinum status in the 2018 year. The award was received by several board and chapter members who attended the Awards Luncheon.
The chapter hopes to see you at the next convention, where we will be returning to the Marriott Marquis Houston and George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX from March 26-31, 2020.
