By Portland Chapter President Steven McBride
It has been a very busy inaugural year for the Portland Chapter of RCI, Inc., and the Education Committee and Golf Committee are preparing for our final two major events of 2017.
We are excited to announce that the Portland Chapter will be hosting our first annual golf tournament on September 28th, 2017, at the Lewis River Golf Club, located just north of the Portland area in Woodland, Washington. We have received great feedback and support for this event, and are eager to provide an occasion to spend time with industry friends and colleagues after such a busy summer season! The golf tournament will also serve as the start of the election process for available officer positions for fiscal year 2018.
On November 9th and 10th, 2017, the Portland Chapter will present an Education Symposium at Hayden’s Lakefront Grill in Tualatin, Oregon. A total of 16 CEHs can be earned by attendees of the symposium. The two-day program includes breakfast, lunch, and a wide variety of programs, including the following:
Day 1 – Exterior Walls Quality Assurance
A full-day course covering a variety of topics that relate to professionals who are interested in performing observations to assure that exterior wall systems are installed in accordance with construction documents. This course offers information related to requirements for obtaining the REWO certification offered by RCI, Inc. Day 1 will be presented by Colin Murphy of Trinity | ERD, and André Coppin of Cornerstone Architectural Group.
Day 2 – Building Envelope Presentations
- Principles of Building Science – Dr. Paul Shipp, USG
- Evaluating Moisture Sources in Roofing – Wade Vorley, Wiss Janey, Elstner Associations, Inc.

So Cal Chapter Hosts Meetings
By So Cal Chapter Treasurer Ivan Chak
The So Cal Chapter of RCI hosted their third meeting of the year on July 20th, 2017 at the Arcadia Main Fabrication Facility in Vernon, CA. This is the first time in two years that the chapter has held an on-site technical outing at a manufacturer’s facility. The event was well attended, with a turnout of approximately 40 participants of diverse technical backgrounds from local A/E/C, specifier/consultant, and industry communities.
So Cal Chapter of RCI President Szymon Zienkiewicz introduced the guest speaker and gracious host for the event, James Fitzsimmons of Arcadia. Fitzsimmons delivered an engaging and comprehensive presentation on storefront and curtainwall systems. He provided valuable information into technical aspects of fenestration systems, and showcased several interesting example cases on how front-end design modifications and custom fabrication can assist in maintaining the overall design intent. Fitzsimmons brought a unique and authentic perspective from his past project experiences, helping to illustrate how a collaborative project team approach assisted in bringing several of his past projects to the finish line despite competing aesthetic, budget, and scheduling priorities.Following the presentation, Arcadia plant staff took event attendees through a guided tour of the active main plant, providing us with an exciting behind-the-doors look at how commercial fenestration systems— including steel-framed windows, storefront, unitized curtainwall, and terrace doors— are constructed from elemental components. The event was concluded with boxed lunches and cold refreshments, enjoyed in Arcadia’s meeting space.
The chapter would like to extend a special thank you to the employees of Arcadia for providing a warm and generous welcome to our attendees, and is grateful for their hospitality and hard work behind the scenes. The event was a rousing success, and could not have happened without their help and coordination efforts.
On August 15th, 2017, the So Cal Chapter of RCI hosted their fourth technical meeting of the calendar year that included networking opportunities, dinner, and a technical presentation regarding commercial vapor retarders delivered by Darren Perry, RRC, PE, of Soprema, Inc. The meeting was held at JT Schmid’s Restaurant & Brewery in Anaheim, CA.
Perry presented on commercial roofing vapor retarders, including condensation and vapor drive fundamentals, vapor retarder material options, challenges facing the industry, and solution options. He also highlighted some of the nuances in navigating code requirements for vapor retarder design, application within common roof assemblies, and aspects of substrate preparation and installation.
The event was attended by 26 consultant and industry participants, who enjoyed a social hour, dinner with choice of beef, chicken or salmon entrée, and earned 1 hour of continuing education approved by RCI and AIA. The chapter would like to thank the volunteers, attendees and presenter for their contribution to another successful technical meeting.
The chapter hopes to see you at their next event on October 10th, a joint meeting with Union Roofing Contractors Association (URCA) at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotels in Norwalk, CA. The meeting will feature an open forum discussion with a six-member panel of RCI consultants and URCA contractors aiming to shed light on the constantly evolving consultant-contractor interaction, collaboration, and challenges in the modern construction realm. Event attendance, including dinner, is complimentary for RCI members.
